The Ocean Lifeguard Training Course is taught at the beginning of every summer. It is impossible to get a job as a new LBTBP lifeguard without either passing OLTC or having passed LBTBP LIT Level 2 (or higher) within the past 15 months.
There is a written exam (primarily covering this textbook) and a mandatory skill test (in which you must perform swimming, running, paddling, rowing, and rescue skills). You must pass both the written exam and mandatory skill test with scores of at least 80 percent.
The course is scheduled for four days late in June. It lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day (with a break from noon to 1:00 p.m. for lunch), and it is taught at Bayview Park (68th Street and Long Beach Boulevard in Brant Beach) and on the 68th Street ocean beach.
Each day, there are workouts, lectures, and practice sessions. Much time is spent in the water, which may be cold, so bring a wetsuit if possible. Bring sunscreen, towels, and water jugs as well.
Candidates who complete all of the LBTBP job requirements and who work for LBTBP will be paid for the time spent taking the classes.
