The swim test consists of 8 freestyle lengths of the St. Francis Center pool, which is 75 feet in length. To pass, you must finish in 2:45 minutes or less. Goggles and a swim cap are permitted, but a diving start is not.

If you are a veteran guard who has worked for LBTBP for ten years or more or are 30 years of age as of opening day, your swim test time must be 2:55 minutes or less with an additional second allowed for each year over age 30.
Non-first responders, such as captains and the LIT Program Director, must complete the test in 3:30 minutes or less. Non-first responders meeting this standard, but not the standard of the previous paragraph, may assist in rescues but will never be assigned to sit the lifeguard stand and cannot cover a beach alone. The beach supervisor may designate other positions to be covered by this category. Office staff who are not regularly on the beach must complete the swim test in order to be able to assist in rescues and to participate in beach patrol competitions.
There will only be four dates the swim test will be held. You may only take the swim test a total of two(2) times. If you do not pass the swim test, you will not be hired as a Long Beach Township ocean lifeguard.

During these dates, three lanes of the pool have been reserved for anyone, veterans and rookies alike, trying out for LBTBP. Enter at the east poolside door, sign in, and respect all pool rules. There are no scheduled swim tests for lifeguard applicants after May 28th!
If we have not received your application, you will not be on the list at the St. Francis Aquatic Center for pre-test and pre-season pool training!!!
