Tragic water accidents can happen quickly. You should always be aware of ocean conditions. Long Beach Township lifeguards are trained to identify potential hazards, ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water.

Beach regulations are mandated by state law and local ordinances. Penalties may be imposed for infraction, including, failing to immediately obey all orders, direction whistles or other signals by township lifeguards.

To sum up the following ordinance, no sunshade device is allowed on the beach except “collapsible monopole beach umbrellas which have a maximum diameter of the umbrella not exceeding eight (8) feet and tents and other devices approved by the Long Beach Township Police Department for use by holders of any permits issued…”.

So, only single pole beach umbrellas no wider than 8 ft. (the actual umbrella shade) are allowed on the beach. If you are having a wedding or some other event on the beach, always check with the LBTPD to make sure you have any required permits. You may be able to acquire a special permit for another type of shading device for guests of the permitted event, as approved by the LBTPD (case by case basis).
