beach regulations
Tragic water accidents can happen quickly. You should always be aware of ocean conditions. Long Beach Township lifeguards are trained to identify potential hazards, ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water.

Beach regulations are mandated by state law and local ordinances. Penalties may be imposed for infraction, including, failing to immediately obey all orders, direction whistles or other signals by township lifeguards.


The following shall be prohibited in those areas supervised by the township lifeguards, designated as protected bathing areas:

To throw, bat or catch a baseball, football, basketball, softball, rubber ball, beach ball, Frisbee or any other object in the protected beach areas where bathing is supervised. No other activity or action shall be permitted which will endanger or likely to endanger the health, safety or welfare of others or oneself. [Amended 12-5-1980 by Ord. No. 80-34C]

To swim or bathe beyond a safe depth in the ocean, as indicated, determined or regulated by the township lifeguards.

To use any inflatable raft, inner tube, water wings or any floating or inflated object of any kind or description on ocean beaches of the township, except as indicated, determined or regulated by the township lifeguards.

To throw, place, deposit or leave any bottles, glass, crockery, sharp or pointed article or thing, paper, refuse or debris of any kind, in the areas except in the proper receptacles provided therefor at the street ends. No trash cans are to be taken from the streets and placed on the beach by unauthorized persons.

To fail to immediately obey all orders, direction whistles or other signals used by the township lifeguards and police.

To sleep on the beach within the areas defined during any time between 12:OO midnight and 6:00 a.m.

To change clothes, dress, undress or otherwise to disrobe, except outer wraps.

To picnic which shall mean the carrying of or otherwise transporting any box, basket, bag, tub or other receptacle in which there is contained food or beverages, or both, and the consumption of the food or beverages or both, within the areas described. The possession of nonalcoholic beverages for consumption not exceeding one (1) quart per person shall not be construed as picnicking on the protected bathing areas. [Amended 6-17-1977 by Ord. To ride or walk horses on the beach.

To run on the beach within the guarded areas supervised by the township lifeguards and designated as protected bathing areas. [Added 12-5-1980 by Ord. No. 80-34C]

To launch or land jet skis in the ocean or bay beaches of the township. [Added 5-18-1990 by Ord. No. 90.17C]

To operate, ride or use a skateboard, or park or store a boat, hobie-cat or boat trailer in the township owned ocean- or bay front narks. [Added 7-20-1990 by Ord. No. 90=23C]

Beach Regulations

Beaches are guarded from June 22, 2008 through Labor Day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Beach Badges are required for all persons age 12 through 64 from June 18 through September 4, 2006.

Dogs are prohibited on Long Beach Township beaches between May 1 and October 1.

It is a violation of Federal Law to interfere with the natural behavior of marine mammals.

Vehicles are prohibited on the beach between May 15 and October 15. For permit information call 609-361-1000 Ext. 203.
